Lisa had only pretended to sleep when June tucked the comforter around her. Then Griffin kissed her and still she pretended to sleep. With her eyes closed she listened to Griffin settle into bed the children of his first wife, who was sleeping in the guest room on the same floor. She thought this through without indignation. It was just a fact. Her husband’s first wife was going to sleep on the same floor of the house as her husband. And her husband’s gentle first wife had nursed the violent second wife with tenderness. But if the social workers took the second wife away, then the first wife might be living in the second wife’s house with the first wife’s children and also the second wife’s daughter, while the second wife was in jail for child abuse, and when the law released her back into the world she would have to register with the local police as a known danger to children. If she committed suicide, her daughter would never recover. But if she were dead, she wouldn’t know.
